Cold plunge safety: who should not, and how to start

Who should not cold plunge, the cold shock response, and the rules that apply to everyone. Plus electrical safety for UK garden setups.

Published 8 September 2026.

Cold water immersion has real benefits and real risks. We state the risks plainly on every page because that is what an honest review site does, and because the people most drawn to cold plunging are often the people who most need to read this.

Speak to a doctor before cold plunging if you have: any cardiovascular condition, high blood pressure, a history of arrhythmia or stroke, Raynaud's, cold urticaria, epilepsy, or if you are pregnant. Cold water triggers a sudden rise in heart rate and blood pressure (the cold shock response) that can be dangerous for a vulnerable heart.

Rules that apply to everyone

  1. Never plunge alone. Cold shock can cause gasping and loss of muscle control within seconds. Have someone within earshot.
  2. Start mild and short. 12 to 15C for one to two minutes. Work down in temperature and up in time over weeks, not days.
  3. Get in slowly and control your breathing. The first 30 seconds are the dangerous ones.
  4. Get out immediately if you feel dizzy, short of breath, have chest pain, or lose coordination.
  5. Warm up gradually afterwards. Dry clothes and movement, not a hot shower straight away.
  6. Do not combine with alcohol or plunge straight after a heavy meal.
  7. Keep the water clean. Skin infections are the most common problem in practice. Filter, sanitise, and change the water on schedule.

Electrical safety

Almost all home units run from a standard 230V 13A socket. Outdoor installations should use a weatherproof socket on an RCD-protected circuit installed by a qualified electrician. Keep the chiller off the ground and out of standing water.
